Patch Team Discussion: Food Accessibility & Affordability

Monthly Patch Team discussion focusing on making food more accessible and affordable.

1) The immediate needs of our community

2) Share what is currently happening in the community (ex: Our Place services, Garden Collaborative initiatives, faith-based meals, Boys & Girls Club Family Food nights, etc.)

3) Tie it all to the long term vision and initiatives to make healthy food
accessible and affordable (i.e. forum on food including local businesses, organizations, residents. Also, pursuing a local food policy council, identifying policies at the local level to support food security efforts)

4) How individuals and groups can support and get involved in the items
above

October Coalition Gathering: Mental Health & Substance Prevention
Friday, October 18. 12:00-1:30pm

Join Greater Falls Connections for our monthly coalition gathering. This month, we’ll lead a lively discussion on the connections between mental health and substance use. A guest speaker will talk about these connections through the lens of recovery and mental wellbeing.

A free, homecooked meal will be served. All are welcome.

Responsible Beverage Training
Tuesday, November 5th, 2013. 5:30-8:30pm

• In-person cashier training (second class) for retailers selling tobacco and alcohol products.

• Educate persons selling alcohol and tobacco products and persons serving alcohol regarding their legal responsibilities relative to the product.

• Students are instructed by a Liquor Control Educator on criminal and civil liabilities regarding alcohol.  Specific topics include Dram Shop liability, serving or selling to minors, recognizing intoxication, intervention techniques, fake identification cards, and general regulations.

• VT Department of Liquor Control (DLC) yearly trains approximately 8,000 sellers and servers in the state. Certified training is a statutory requirement in Vermont. This method has consistently proved to be the most successful method of instilling responsibility and demonstrating good techniques. A full listing of DLC trainings can be found here.

National Above The Influence Day
Thursday, October 17th, 2013. All day

Youth from across the country will show how they rise above through the 2nd Annual National Above The Influence Day. Activities and projects will launch in schools locally and throughout the country. For more information, go to: National Above The Influence 2013.

Bellows Falls CROP Hunger Walk 2013
Sunday, October 20th, 2013. 1:00pm registration, 1:30pm walk

CROP Hunger Walks are community-wide events sponsored by CWS and organized by local volunteers to raise funds to end hunger. This is a benefit for Our Place Drop In Center.
